Fight the Power! Buying power that is.
Shoppers are angry with Trump’s antics and are quickly refusing to put their hard earned money back into any businesses that supports him or his family, including retailers who carry Trump merchandise. Luxury stores including Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Macy’s have all fallen victim to the #GrabYourWallet movement.
There is a trend among us, a large collective emphasis on anti-Trump everything. This trend does not exclude his daughter Ivanka Trump, whose fashion line although originally carried by Nordstrom and a few other retailers is quickly changing.
The #GrabYourWallet movement began as an initial response started by Shannon Coulter, Founder & CEO of DoubleKnown Marketing and Communications. Since Trump’s initial run for president, his actions have caused uproar as boycotts continue to sweep across the nation.
The protests pit Trump supporter and Trump haters against each other; leaving fashion brands forced to choose between business or politics. It seems as though, we, the people are collectively tired of Trump’s tyrannical ways and controversial executive orders. As a capitalist nation, some would argue it is a smart idea to formulate a protest in rebuttal towards our enterprise culture. Fighting the power with our pockets, purses, and piggy banks, might hit the Trumps where it hurts. Many shoppers do not agree with the continued support Ivanka Trump showed through her father’s election and do not want retailers to sell her label any longer.

Last week, Nordstrom announced that it was officially ditching the brand, and Neiman Marcus removed the line from its website. Just Yesterday, Trump clapped back with a tweet at Nordstrom for the mistreatment of his kin and his disappointment at the backlash received from a daughter simply standing by her father.

Donald Trump’s impulse to blast his enemies on Twitter has become a normalized routine for the president. However, Trump supporters are still going strong with pleads to Macy’s to NOT discontinue selling Ivanka’s products. One long time, Macy’s customer, Michele Simmons posted a very strong stance on Macy’s Facebook explaining why she is adamant about the retailer not removing anything related to Trump:
As a large majority of the nation is inclined to boycott Ivanka Trump’s business, the pressure is now on Macy’s. Not to mention there is speculation regarding pressure internally as the company is struggling to sell the brand post-election. According to Business Insider, in January, the retailer announced it was closing more than 60 stores due to losing sales and growing competitors.
Before coming to a full decision on the matter, as of right now the retailer is still striving to make somewhat of a profit by marking down most of their Ivanka Trump items. As it stands, the question is if Macy’s will decide to cut ties with the fashion line and if they can afford not to do so.
Many disgruntled loyal customers are threatening to cut up their Macy’s cards and only support Nordstrom moving forward should Macy’s continue to carry the Ivanka Trump line.
