It’s officially back to school season and college students across the country are getting back into an academic mindset.

If you’re in college, when you get your syllabus at the beginning of the semester, you’re likely to mentally tell yourself that ‘you’ve got this.’ Naturally, you make note of major upcoming deadlines so you can plan to work ahead and get things done within a respectable time frame. But then, life kicks in, the work piles up and suddenly it’s the night before a 15 page paper is due and you are staring at a blank screen.

You’re not alone, 20 percent of college students pull at least one all nighter a month. It happens but don’t turn this into a habit. Too many all nighters can have a negative impact on your overall academic performance. It turns out getting enough sleep is just as important as studying.

As you go into the semester keep in mind that lack of sleep does not mean you’re working harder. Before you get into a bad cycle of all nighters, be proactive and make sleep a priority this semester.
