I remember being 8 years old and sitting in front of the TV and realizing that I wanted to do something that was worthy of being on television.
I didn’t have the words at the time but looking back, my intention was not be famous. I knew that television was a powerful way to reach millions of people and make a lasting impact. It wasn’t until later that I honed in on my vision and realized that I wanted to use the power of media to create change. My desire to make an impact on the world and create a legacy fuels what I’m doing as the founder of Her Agenda.
Today we’re partnering with VSP Vision Care, the nation’s only not-for-profit vision care company with the mission to help people see. Isn’t that a great thing to aim for? It got me thinking about the importance of having a clear vision not only for eyes, but for your life and ambitions.
When you have big dreams, thinking about your future can be exciting and intimidating at the same time. Having focus and maintaining that focus with a plan helps you turn your vision into actionable goals and keeps you on track in spite of the obstacles in your path.
Here are six tips to tips to help you avoid distractions and make your vision a reality:
1. Get Clear With Yourself
Manifesting the vision for your life begins with you. When you get clear with who you are internally it’s easier to see more for your life. This starts by looking within, which is not easy in today’s world of constant connection to external devices and constant scrolling through the lives of others in the palm of our hands. However, when you carve out time for self, to get quiet, to center your thoughts and focus on your true internal motivations and desires it becomes easier to drown out the noise.
2. Be Aware Of Your Spark
I was very young when I connected with using the power of media as a vehicle to manifest my vision for making a lasting and meaningful impact on the world. That feeling lead me down a path to becoming a journalist and ultimately an entrepreneur and founder of a digital media company that empowers women.
Everyone’s moment that sparks the vision will be different, but in order for you to make the most of it you must be aware of what you’re bringing into your environment and how it affects you. Everything from who you follow on social media, to the friends you keep around you to the places and spaces you’re in everyday impacts you in different ways.
3. Write It Down
Get it out of your head and write it out. The vision begins within yourself but in order to manifest it you need to see it. Make it real and tangible by creating a vision board. The notes you write about your vision in combination with your vision board serves as daily reminders of your goals and where you want to go.
4. Set Goals
When you’re pulled and motivated by a large vision it is very easy to become overwhelmed. Whether you want to be the CEO of a company, or open a community center to transform your neighborhood, or launch a movement and change the lives of millions where you are today seems light years away from that. However, it becomes less overwhelming when you set small goals with deadlines to help you move forward.
5. Ask For Feedback and Help
Mentors, advisors and close friends should all be aware of your vision. This helps them to help you and they will also hold you accountable for staying true to it. I always say that most people want to help you but you have to tell them how. You tell them through your actions, through sharing your goals and taking advantage of the tools we have at our fingertips to help others understand you and your vision. Everything from your bio on twitter to your elevator pitch should be consistent and clear.
6. Respond Accordingly
It’s not about what happens to you it’s how you respond to it. As we experience things and take in more information our perception and understanding of our vision may shift. Sometimes the perspective of others can help to provide clarity and focus your thoughts. However, it’s ultimately up to you to make sense of the data, and you need to know and understand that you are equipped to do that.
Your experiences and understanding of yourself will guide you in understanding what happens on your path to making your vision a reality. There will be roadblocks and setbacks and life will come at you hard. As you move closer to your goal, you’ll go through more and more difficult moments. Keep going, and push forward no matter what. This is why step one, getting clear with yourself is most important here. When setbacks try to derail you, or the world tells you that you can’t, you will know how to respond. When your motivation comes from within, and the outside world simply affirms what you already know to be true the spark will propel you forward at a speed where no one can stop you.
