    5. Designers + Geeks: A Humanist Take on Digital Experience @ Flatiron School
      7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

In a fragmented media landscape of “alternative facts,” disputed science, and larger-than-life personalities, what’s a designer (or citizen) to do? To create, we often talk about things like “funnels, leads, hits, conversions, engagement,” but rarely pause to ask what role our products play in the greater digital ecosystem. How can we design (or consume) digital products in a way that supports our growth, both as individuals and as a society?

Speaker:  JESS BROWN | Director of UX, VICE Media

Jess Brown leads the digital design team as Director of UX at VICE, where she focuses on showcasing VICE’s distinct storytelling on mobile, web, and TV apps. Since joining VICE, she’s worked on five initiatives–VICE VideoVICELAND digitalVICE mobile apps, a network-wide web redesign, and a brand new CMS. Previously, she was the first UX practitioner at Rent the Runway, where she established design and research practices that brought users’ stories to the heart of the product.

    3. Identity Matters: Deconstructing the Feminist Myth
      6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

How do you reconcile your various personal identities with current feminist movements? More importantly, how can activists encourage participation that acknowledges traditionally marginalized communities and their concerns?

Join the Impact Hub DC (IHDC) community as it kicks off Women’s History Month and presents this inaugural event for the IHDC Woke Wednesdays series. In addition to offering a plan to move forward, we will discuss how feminists can be more intentional about promoting diverse representation in the feminism movement. This intersectional feminism, a term coined by Professor Kimberle Crenshaw in the late 1980s, will be the framework used to help answer these ongoing questions. The event will feature a dynamic panel of local activists and the opportunity to engage with fellow attendees. We look forward to you joining the discussion!

Admission for guests is a donated item clothing or pair of shoes for female clients at Dress for Success DC. Note: Donations must be professional attire. Larger sizes are especially needed.

Woke Wednesdays is a monthly discussion series at Impact Hub DC. These conversations serve to expand what it means to be “woke” by bringing together a diverse group of change-makers eager to discuss relevant social justice issues and play an active role in creating a more equitable society.

Leverage these Two Components for Sales Success

This workshop focuses on selling techniques to close the sale and using customer relationship management (CRM) software from QuickBooks to build and maintain your customer base. The software enables you to develop your selling skills because it manages lead generation and follow up for you, establishing a successful “sales funnel”.

The first portion deals with selling skills and techniques you bring to the table via a five step process: prospecting, rapport, probing for needs, features/benefits and closing the sale. The second module demonstrates the capabilities of QuickBooks CRM in helping companies build, maintain and expand customer relationships. It shows how CRM manages customer information, business information, sales transactions, marketing and customer support.

Real life examples, vignettes and role play exercises will make this a highly interactive and reality based workshop.

At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

      • Utilize sales greetings to initiate the sales process
      • Generate a features/benefit sheet that converts your service/product characteristics into benefits for the customer
      • Describe effective market research techniques
      • Develop examples for each stage of the five-step selling process
      • Summarize how CRM helps manage customer data, accesses business information and automates sales and marketing functions

    1. BRAVE Summit at Georgetown University! @ Georgetown University McDonough School of Business
      9:00 am – 4:30 pm

BRAVE was pioneered by several Black women of Georgetown University for the purpose of combating the pervasive, negative media coverage and replacing it with the truth, our truth. BRAVE is on a mission to further expose the magic that lies within us.

      Black #MelaninOnFleek

Resilient- The ability to withstand and quickly recover from difficult conditions. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Artistic: Having or revealing natural creative skill.  We use our artistic abilities to convey our story and showcase our uniqueness.

Vigilant: Mindful, Observant, Alert, #WOKE. We are mindful and attentive to the possible dangers or difficulties thrown at us.

      Enough: Black women are enough.

The Georgetown University Women of Color (GUWOC) invite you to the second annual BRAVE Summit, recognizing the work and accomplishments of black women (the first in the nation) on March 25th, 2017.

Often times, black women are told that they need to be empowered when in fact, black women already have this power and don’t need someone to give it to them. Black women just need the space to unleash it. That’s also why 300+ black women and allies came together last year to celebrate the black woman. This year, GUWOC recognizing the fact that black women the most educated group, GUWOC recognizing the fact that black women’s voices are being heard, and the summit is recognizing the work that is being done, the work that was done by the black women that led before us, and the work that future generations will do, with our help.

Therefore, this summit, titled BRAVE (Black. Resilient. Artistic. Vigilant. Enough.), will bring women leaders particularly in the DC area, and GUWOC structuring our summit in panels and break out sessions for students across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas, with invitation to select high school seniors.

    1. Come Together: Music Festival and Label Market @ MoMA PS 1
      12:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Come Together: Music Festival and Label Market offers live performances, films, workshops, and panels that celebrate the interactive ecosystem of local and international music communities, and a label fair where visitors can explore some of the most interesting, cutting-edge music being released today.

While the very fabric of music culture has been stretched—maybe shredded—by fast-changing digital platforms, the central and essential role that communities play in both the creation and consumption of new sounds remains unchanged. When the iconic NYC record shop Other Music closed last summer, there was an overwhelming outpouring of love and emotion from artists, fans, and the industry over the loss of not just a store, but a meeting place, incubator, and community space for forward-thinking art. With Come Together, Other Music and MoMA PS1 recast the fading record store experience for the modern era.

    1. How I Got Over: A Conversation with Soledad O’Brien @ The Greene Space
      7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

During the 2016 election, award-winning journalist and writer Soledad O’Brien charged cable news and media companies of profiting off hate speech normalized by then-candidate racist Donald Trump’s campaign. What made for good TV ratings did not make for good journalism.

WNYC editor Rebecca Carroll hosts an unconventional conversation with O’Brien about her new political magazine show “Matter of Fact” and how black and brown journalists and media makers can deliver balanced coverage with President Trump in the White House for the next four years.

About How I Got Over series:

Join us for a new project reinventing language around race through a series of conversations and performances that explore, express and examine what it means when a social construct becomes the social order. We want people to get personal. We want provocative dialogue. We want to generate new language to execute real change. We want to talk about fear – and how it’s different if you are black or white. We want to hear people explore racism.
