    1. Harriet Tubman Prize Talk With Aisha K. Finch @ Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture 515 Malcolm X Boulevard New York, NY 10037
      6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Author Aisha K. Finch talks to Herman Bennett, Professor of History at The Graduate Center, CUNY, about her book, Rethinking Slave Rebellion in Cuba: La Escalera and the Insurgencies of 1841-1844, which is the winner of our first ever Harriet Tubman Prize.

In Rethinking Slave Rebellion in Cuba, published by The University of North Carolina Press, the jury of the Harriet Tubman Prize saw a “nuanced, deeply researched, and precisely rendered” account of the events. “With a textured reading of the gendered dynamics of the revolt, based on voluminous judicial documents, and a penetrating analysis of the broader social and political consequences of the uprising and its brutal repression, Rethinking Slave Rebellion is both timely and timeless, sure to take its place among the great works on Atlantic World slavery.

    2. Meditation and Mindfulness: Increase Presence and Focus In Your Work and Life @ Centre for Social Innovation
      7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Meditation and mindfulness have become extremely popular among the most successful people in the world and rightly so: more and more scientific research shows that regular meditation can greatly improve the health of our mind and body. Practicing meditation and mindfulness can help us let go of distracting thoughts that cloud our minds, expand awareness of ourselves, others, and the world, as well as reduce stress, increase focus, and improve our abilities to be creative.

With just a few minutes a day, you can begin experiencing the benefits of meditation including:

      • Improved mental clarity and focus

      • A greater feeling of presence, positivity, and compassion

      • Higher energy levels and better sleep

      • Increased creativity and ability to manage change

      • Greater sense of balance in life and work

with meditation trainer and nonprofit professional Jenn Lishansky.

      Hosted by Be Social Change.

Your prospects are searching online. Website conversion means a visitor taking an action that you want them to take — contacting you, subscribing or buying online. The visitor takes 3-7 seconds to decide if your company deserves more of their time. Once they initiate conversion, the website still has only 6 seconds to convince them to buy.

This non-technical workshop will help you turn website traffic into conversions and sales. Customers will feel your company can address and solve their needs, wants or issues.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

      • Identify what you can expect your company’s website to deliver
      • Summarize techniques to generate and nurture leads from website visits
      • List ways to turn website visitors into paying customers
      • Describe how to evaluate and measure your website’s performance, including factors to watch for
      • Outline ways to test your website for optimal performance and SEO ratings–getting what you paid for

      Who should attend?
This event is a “non-technical” workshop, for anyone with responsibility for the effectiveness and profitability of their company’s current website.

These funds will be going directly towards the “Work DC! Certification Collaborative”. This program is designed to partner The Future Foundation’s youth and young adults with small business owners throughout the community. They are given the opportunity to earn certification in hospitality, cosmetology, barbering, brand management, public relations, automotive repair, fashion management, digital media, journalism, facilities management and child care. Small business leaders get the workforce they need without outsourcing. Our “future adults” gain certifications that can expand their professional options.

An $8 dollar donation ensures 10 youth can have the writing utensils they need for work/school.

An $18 dollar donation ensures we can print over 25 resumes on quality paper. We do this for our youth and members of our Single Parent Support Circle.

An $180 donation ensures that one youth gets a pair of khakis, belt, socks, uniform shirt and work-appropriate shoes to wear to work/school and transportation for their first week at work/school.

Any amount counts toward changing the way these Ward 8 families see the future.

You could help them create a future worth learning about, working in, cleaning up, voting in and fighting for.

The Independent Film School’s Free Screenwriting Workshop with Ela Thier

If you’re not writing as often as you wish you were, then you’re a lot like everyone else that Ela knows, including herself. This workshop will hurl a wrecking ball at your writing blocks. She’s studied with some of the most well-known “screenwriting gurus” out there and then found herself blocked for years. Forget about inciting incidents and plot points. There are fresher, more interesting ways to arrive at even fresher and more interesting stories. Going after what’s personal, authentic, inspired and surprising. She’s not about paint-by-number screenplays. After a two-hour brain massage that will loosen all those knots, you’ll leave remembering why you wanted to be a writer in the first place. You’ll also leave with a sharper understanding of story structure, and with structural tools that ignite rather than extinguish the imagination.
