The Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches Invites You to a Special Training on September 26

Every business and organization need to think about safety and security. Prevention is critical, but are you wondering where to start?  If so, don’t miss this September 26th training.

The Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Johnson Controls, is hosting a special session to help businesses take the necessary steps to protect your business, your property and your people.

Safeguarding your business requires time and effort, but it pays off. According to estimates, there are four burglaries every minute in the U.S. Businesses that are not prepared run the risk of being more vulnerable to safety and security threats.

The September 26 training will help organizations of every size to create a safer, more secure environment. The key learnings will include:

      • Working with employees to understand the top security threats
      • Designing fast, efficient incident response plans
      • Identifying actions that owners and employees can take to deter crime and limit resource loss
      • Reducing business vulnerability to external threats

      In this session…

Big data has been transforming the media industry for some time, but perhaps in no more significant way than in the growing application of advanced audience data. Media buyers and sellers are moving beyond traditional demographics toward using more precise behavioral-, interest- and lifestyle-based segmentation as currency.

This session will explore this growing trend and the lucrative opportunities that exist to effectively reach consumers with advertising and content that they find relevant and engaging.

Ellen Pao, Kapor Capital Investment Partner; Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the Kapor Center for Social Impact; co-founder of Project Include and Author of Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change

Laura Weidman Powers, Co-founder and CEO of Code2040 – Moderator

In 2012, Ellen Pao sent shockwaves throughout Silicon Valley when she sued her employer, powerhouse venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, for workplace discrimination against women and other minority groups. While she lost her case in 2015, her fight for change was just beginning. From her work as a founder of Project Include to fighting negative culture as interim CEO of Reddit, Pao dedicates time and energy to making sure others don’t have the same experiences she did, and she recently published her first book, Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change.

Pao’s bravery in calling out systemic harassment and other abusive practices within the tech community has inspired others–in the wake of the most recent stories around discrimination and harassment, many mention Pao by name in their accounts. Today, women, people of color, and allies in the workplace and beyond are standing up for themselves and their colleagues. They’re pushing back against toxic workplace cultures in Silicon Valley and beyond, galvanizing widespread coverage advocating for increased accountability of individuals and companies: they’re resetting Silicon Valley.

Join Ellen Pao and Laura Weidman Powers, co-founder and CEO of Code2040, for an empowering discussion about overcoming the struggle to be heard and raising your voice to create lasting change.

    1. March for Black Women @ National Mall
      10:00 am – 10:00 pm

“Black women’s issues are racial justice issues. Black lived-experiences related to gender, sexuality, gender identity are–racial– justice–issues. On September 30, 2017, Black women and comrades will unite and lock arms and march unapologetically at the center of the scheduled MARCH FOR RACIAL JUSTICE as our very own MARCH FOR BLACK WOMEN.

Black Womens Blueprint need you to show up for Black women.

Our March within a March is not only a mass mobilization centered on Black women, but a reminder to every single one of us that so long as Black women are killed by the cops; so long as Black women are taken or go missing; so long as we are raped by friends or by strangers or by nationally renown predators — there can be NO JUSTICE.

8 Black trans women are murdered in the first four months of 2017 =#NOJUSTICE

60 women report rape by Cosby including 22 Black women. Cosby admits he drugged and “had sex” with them but there’s a hung jury = #NOJUSTICE

June 2017 Pregnant Charleena Lyles shot and killed by Seattle police = #NOJUSTICE

May 2017, 27 year old Jonie Block was killed by police = #NOJUSTICE

April 2017, Glenda Taylor stabbed and strangled by a probation officer, the officer was also her fiance = #NOJUSTICE

In March 2017, 38 year old Sherida Davis was shot and killed by police, the officer was also her husband = #NOJUSTICE

In March 2017, 21 year old pregnant Alteria Woods was shot and killed by police = #NOJUSTICE

In February 2017, 30 year old Morgan Rankins was shot and killed by police = #NOJUSTICE

In March 2017, 10 of our children went missing in less than 2-weeks in the I-495 corridor that stretches between Baltimore and D.C., most of them Black girls = #NOJUSTICE

As of 2014, 64,000 Black women were MISSING in the United States = #NOJUSTICE

Thousands of Black girls under 18 are pimped out by men from our own communities = #NOJUSTICE

40% of young people trafficked in the U.S. are Black, most of them girls = #NOJUSTICE

Black women are 13% of U.S. women, but make up about half of domestic violence homicide victims = #NOJUSTICE

Black women are beaten by their partners at a rate of 35% higher than white women = #NOJUSTICE

In April 2017, Karen Smith is shot and killed by her husband and hundreds more such cases go unnoticed = #NOJUSTICE

In California, 81% of girls in the juvenile justice system suffered sexual abuse before being arrested = #NOJUSTICE

40% of girls in the juvenile justice system have been raped or sodomized in their lifetime = #NOJUSTICE

The media doesn’t seem to care = #NOJUSTICE

Black women don’t seem to matter = #NOJUSTICE

Over this past Juneteenth weekend, all of us at Black Women’s Blueprint have meditated on the many violent systems failures that our sisters are forced to endure and which too many of us do not survive.

This is their collective response. BWB can and must refuse to be subsumed within a broader movement that does not see us as fully human.  BWB will resist! See you at the March on September 30th.

Leaders Taking a Stand: Social Impact in Turbulent Times

The current political climate creates an uneasy world stage for companies to navigate. Who are the business leaders who are stepping up to the challenge and leading by example? In turbulent times whom do we look to for leadership? Come out on October 6, 2017 as this conference explores how to enact social impact across disciplines: philanthropies, nonprofit organizations, social ventures, and traditional business. In this year’s conference you will meet business and organizational leaders who actively use their platform to drive change in education reform, the refugee crisis, job creation for the formerly incarcerated, and climate change.

We each have a role to play for this is our future to form. What could we accomplish together if we each collaborated with one or two people in this room? We have a choice to call upon each other and motivate ourselves and others into action. Take a stand towards driving innovation and impact around social challenges and participate in our day-long interactive workshop led by TYTHEdesign. During the workshop, participants will use the insights and best practices from conference speakers to create strategies and solutions for impact with cross-disciplinary thinkers, innovators, and changemakers.

Kelly’s book adventures have taken her from New York to Silicon Valley to Dublin and Australia (to name just a few), from speaking with audiences ranging from out-placed Wall Street executives to college entrepreneurs, to teams at Google HQ and at the Rotary Club of Dallas. Build Your Dream Network has been featured in publications ranging from Vogue.com to Business Insider and Working Mother Magazine.

Doors open at 8:30 AM for bagels and coffee and an opportunity for networking, and our panel kicks off at 9:00 AM sharp.

    2. True Crime Stories: Relationships and Responsibilities @ Tribeca Film Center
      7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

There is no doubt that the “true crime” documentary genre is thriving and that such film and television projects are enjoying unprecedented buzz. Studies show that women are their biggest audience, and broadcasters are taking notice. We will explore this phenomenon through an in-depth conversation with creators who make crime stories that matter.

By the nature of their work, non-fiction storytellers are always considering how to present and represent their subjects through the creative process. But how is that further complicated in the “true crime” space, when the stakes might literally be life or death? Where do they draw the line between journalism and entertainment? A panel of filmmakers and network executives will discuss the brass tacks of telling these stories and examine their ethical boundaries and sense of responsibility in developing relationships with individuals whose lives or livelihoods are on the line.

      Panelists:

      • Kelly Loudenberg, filmmaker, The Confession Tapes

    1. Covering the Issues Ahead in Trump’s Second Year: Three Day Workshop @ Vanderbilt University
      9:00 am – 5:00 pm

      vu07a

In this free workshop at Vanderbilt University,  journalists will look beyond politics toward issues that are likely to affect nearly every community. You will be equipped with knowledge and awareness to cover some of the most pressing issues that are likely to emerge in 2018. Click here to apply today.

The Affordable Health Care Act: Identify what is not working and what could be done to fix those problems.

Cyber Security: How susceptible and prepared are local, county and state governments to cyber attacks? What about the threat to the nation’s electrical grid and pipelines? What do journalists need to know about issues of private cyber security? How do cyber crimes affect business and finance?

Trade Agreements: It appears likely that there will be some changes to NAFTA. What would those changes mean to business, consumers and manufacturers big and small? What needs fixing? Who would benefit and who would be harmed?

Local and State Governments Taking on Global and National Issues:Maybe it is a sign that Washington is in gridlock and somebody has to do something. But local governments are increasingly at the center of what used to be federal business. From climate agreements to environmental regulations and immigration, local governments are where the action is. The Canadian prime minister met with governors about trade agreements and legislators lobbied governors on the Affordable Health Care Act changes.

The Local Effects of Climate Change: EPA says flooding is becoming more frequent along the U.S. coastline as sea level rises. Nearly every site measured has experienced an increase in coastal flooding since the 1950s. Farmers face changing growing seasons and power companies are logging more demand to cool hot buildings and less demand to warm normally cold ones. Pollen seasons are getting longer and the spread of health worries including Lyme disease and West Nile virus are linked to warming temperatures.

      COSTFREE
Thanks to a grant from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, tuition, basic travel expenses and hotel costs will be covered for those whose applications are accepted. Click here to apply.

Vanderbilt University is excited to partner with Poynter on this project. Participants will attend sessions at the university’s First Amendment Center. In addition, many lectures will be led by Vanderbilt faculty that are world-class researchers and experts on the topics covered by this workshop.
