On March 12, the Smithsonian’s museum will offer a series of exciting programs designed to engage these young women, their peers and their families, and encourage them to explore the arts and sciences.

As the Smithsonian’s 19th and only museum dedicated to the study of African American history and culture, NMAAHC will interpret what it means to be an African American woman in the 21st century. This panel will explore how African American women navigate the intersections of their identity, the historical implications and how it shapes current ideals about what it means to be a black woman.

How does the media shape the identity development of African American women? How does one’s gender, orientation, class, etc., shape the way African American women move through society?

There is a free reception immediately following the event in the One Plaza Lobby at the National Museum of American History. Music will be provided by the girl band duo, BOOMSCAT
