Women and girls historically have been silenced in many aspects around the world. Tonight BMHC will look at art forms through which females express themselves and tell their stories. BMHC will screen the documentary 'Let's Get the Rhythm' by Irene Chagall. The film documents hand-clapping games performed by young girls in US schoolyards and at home, an art that incorporate verbal dexterity with interlocking rhythmic hand patterns. The doc is followed by Q&A featuring interviewees from the film, led by percussionist Bobby Sanabria and dancer Dionne Kamara. Plus a performance of Indian classical dance by the Bharati Dance Academy, led by Bharati Kemraj, will connect hand-clapping games seen in the film with the mudras (hand movements) used in Indian classical dance that also are used to tell stories. Arrive at 6:30 for your personalized henna hand art by Bharati Kemraj + Indian refreshments! Co-sponsor: City Lore.
