This afternoon workshop will address the nuts and bolts of being a freelance writer. We will discuss and look at your story pitches, the art of writing on deadline, the business of freelancing and the basics of creating a social media presence online. This is a hands-on workshop where we will work on pitches during class. Learn how to improve your brand online and best practices for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. This class is a mix of practical information about freelancer skills and the writing life.
What to Bring:
- Bring a written pitch letter or written story idea to class
- Bring a draft of an article you are working on, or the idea for one
- Bring a computer
- Bring a paper and pen (to take notes and for in-class exercises)
Instructor: Jennifer Mattson is a former radio producer for "The Connection" and worked as an editor for National Public Radio. She spent over six years as a producer for CNN, where she was responsible for CNN's daily live newscasts and producing CNN's international coverage. Jennifer came to CNN to work in the Washington bureau's political unit during the 1996 U.S. presidential election. Her work has appeared in TheAtlantic.com, USA TODAY, The Boston Globe, The Women's Review of Books, AsianCorrespondent.com, Tablettalk.comand CNN.com.
