3 Ways To Channel Your Inner #GirlBoss
Everyone knows Sophia Amoruso, founder of NastyGal and #GirlBoss movement, as a renaissance woman – a master of fashion and e-commerce. She was the first person to own a successful eBay store, NastyGal, then, ahead of her time.
I have always been of fan of NastyGal, so I was thrilled when I found out Amoruso had written her debut book, #GirlBoss. The book offers many unapologetic insights on achieving the life you want with empowering guidelines to channel your inner Girl Boss.
After recently sharing a more personal story on LinkedIn about Nasty Gal’s bankruptcy and a failed marriage, Amoruso reveals she still has managed to find love and with her success of the #GirlBoss bestseller, she has a second chance. As I knew, this was not the end for our fierce leader. Here are three things I’ve learned from the Girl Boss herself:
1. Failure is your invention
Many times, when we fail, we withdraw, throw in the towel and admit defeat. Deciding how to react to each failure is inevitably what will transform you into a Girl Boss. A Girl Boss, doesn’t quit, give up or admit defeat. If she feels defeated, it’s only a temporary setback for an even bigger success story in the end.
I’ve failed before and I’ve been rejected. Instead of completely giving up on my goals, or myself, I’ve learned the value of failing. If you allow your failures to reinvent you then you’ll start to take every challenge as motivation – not as a defeat. Within the book, Amoruso declares, “There are secret opportunities hidden inside every failure.”
2. Life is short. Don’t be lazy or give up
We all know success isn’t easy and takes a lot of work. Sometimes success takes years of staying focused and consistently chasing your dreams, which may also include making sacrifices. Some can argue that Sophia was on top of the world. Newly married, with a New York Best Seller, and a thriving fashion company, practically a life any girl could want. Then it all went downhill; instead, Sophia recognized an opportunity to re-vamp and re-brand with Girl Boss, a business that hits harder and smarter after resigning as CEO of NastyGal. Regardless, you cannot afford to be lazy or give up because life is short. Don’t worry about what people will think – take a risk. A Girl Boss has to learn to roll with the punches or throw a punch or two back.
3. Bet on yourself and invest in you
You have to be willing to take chances and understand that your biggest reward on any risk; is the risk you take on yourself. DREAM BIG and BET BIG. You have nothing to lose when you truly believe in yourself. This is why it is imperative to invest in yourself. There are simple ways to invest in you by reading more books, gaining more experience, or furthering your education. Do whatever you must do to hone your skills, and bet on yourself. You’ll realize soon enough, your ROI is greater with more knowledge from experiences, and more lessons from any failures. If you’ve always dreamed about launching a bakery, do it! If you want to start your own e-commerce business, DO IT!
I’ll leave you with my favorite quote from the book, “Your challenge as a #GirlBoss is to dive headfirst into things without being too attached to the results. When your goal is to gain experience, perspective, and knowledge, failure is no longer a possibility. Failure is your invention. I believe that there is a silver lining in everything, and once you begin to see it, you’ll need sunglasses to combat the glare.”
