Often, when the topic of following your dreams comes up, it’s a little cliche. Drop everything, quit your job and do what you love. Follow your passion with all your energy. Okay, but in reality, as adults with responsibilities, how do we really get in tune with our purpose to follow our passion and ultimately live our dream? Here are insights from 6 successful people on how to really go after your dreams.

Ava Duvernay

“So much about our society says, ‘Pursue your dreams, go after your dreams.’ When you really try to think about, ‘How do I do that?’ So often we think, it’s got to be all or nothing, I’ve got to quit my job, I’ve got to leave this to do this. There can be a progression to the dream, there can be steps to it. When you dissect any successful person’s story, it’s really rare that it was all or nothing. It’s steps and I just try to remind myself of that in terms of the things that I want, it’s like, everything is a step, leading you to where you need to go. That is something I wish that I’d been reminded of as I was moving about. I ended up doing it progressively but I wish I would have known that it’s okay. It’s not even that it’s okay, it’s the best way. It’s the best way, you learn a little bit, so when you get there, you’re prepared.”

Steve Jobs

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Oprah Winfrey

“I’ve come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that’s as unique as a fingerprint – and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.”

“I advise you to stop sharing your dreams with people who try to hold you back, even if they’re your parents. Because, if you’re the kind of person who senses there’s something out there for you beyond whatever it is you’re expected to do – if you want to be EXTRA-ordinary- you will not get there by hanging around a bunch of people who tell you you’re not extraordinary. Instead, you will probably

become as ordinary as they expect you to be.”

Charlotte Eriksson

“So many people will tell you ‘no,’ and you need to find something you believe in so hard that you just smile and tell them ‘watch me.’ Learn to take rejection as motivation to prove people wrong. Be unstoppable. Refuse to give up, no matter what. It’s the best skill you can ever learn.”

Shannon L. Alder

“The most important thing is this: to sacrifice what you are now for what you can become tomorrow.”
