It can be hard to live up to expectations set before us, whether it’s from parents, family, or cultural beliefs. Some things can be set in stone from ages ago, while others can originate from experience. However, knowing when to differentiate between personal ambition and what is expected of you can sometimes be tricky, but it can be done.

The balancing act of life comes into place as you decipher, as an adult with goals and ambition, on how you will use your voice to advocate for yourself. This may be difficult, but finding a middle ground will prove to be worthwhile. If you’re not sure where to begin, Her Agenda has gathered a few tools to get you started.

The Importance Of Personal Ambition

Identity is an important trait to solidify in life. Without establishing your own identity in the world, you have nothing. A person’s ambition is what drives them, makes them feel alive, and makes them feel whole.

Purpose is what wakes you up in the morning and keeps you going when you want to quit. Establishing purpose is a part of personal ambition because everyone has a gift/talent, and once you find it, it makes life worth living.

According to Blue Sky Ambition, your goals can be personal or professional and come in many forms. They could be related to learning something new, having a healthier lifestyle, improving your relationships, or attaining professional advancement. The topics are endless and mean different things to different people.

The Importance Of Cultural Expectations

Boundless says that cultural norms can shape self-image, aspirations, and relationships. Positive influences, like fostering a sense of community, are undeniable. However, when cultural expectations overshadow personal desires, the consequences can include mental health struggles like anxiety, depression, or a sense of isolation.

Furthermore, Sash adds that being aware of cultural norms from a range of cultures can help reduce preconceptions about people from cultures that are different from our own and help broaden our interactions with a variety of people.

Why There Needs To Be A Balance

In life, everything comes with a balance. In this case of cultural expectations and personal ambition, you must choose wisely and find what works best for you. You may not agree with all cultural expectations, and your family may not agree with your personal ambitions, but there must be a median formed where all parties can find understanding.

Additionally, Boundless suggests,

Achieving a balance between individuality and cultural expectations requires a nuanced understanding and intentional action:

1. Critical Reflection: Assess which aspects of cultural norms align with personal values.

2. Open Communication: Engage in conversations with family and community to foster mutual understanding.

3. Representation Matters: Seek role models who embody both cultural pride and individuality.

Staking Your Claim

This means that you are identifying and respecting cultural expectations, while also considering your personal ambition. In this route, no stone is left unturned, and essentially everyone is being acknowledged. Elderly people don’t understand “going against the grain,” especially when it comes from ancestral origins, but respectful conversations can clear up many uncertainties.

Staking your claim means you’re taking charge of your life with good intentions. This will also look like setting boundaries, even if it’s with those closest to you. They may not agree with your choices, and that’s okay. You’re leading the life you want to live, and you’re creating a lane they’ve never experienced. And that’s okay. Find new hobbies, healthy mental health activities, and things that align with your new path. Those who love you will eventually come around; just give them time to process. In the meantime, live!
