ESSENCE Ventures Takes Minority Stake In REVOLT’s Parent Company, Uniting Two Black Media Giants

ESSENCE Ventures has made a strategic investment in Offscript Worldwide, the parent company of REVOLT, bringing together two of the most influential names in Black-owned media under a single commercial umbrella. The deal gives ESSENCE Ventures a minority stake in Revolt New Media Holdings LLC and a board seat for Sundial founder and chairman Richelieu Dennis. However, financial terms of the investment were not disclosed.
According to Business Wire, the partnership connects Offscript Worldwide’s portfolio, REVOLT, REVOLT Sports, 3BLACKDOT and the Offscript Creator Network, with the broader holdings of ESSENCE Ventures and its parent, Sundial Media & Technology Group. Combined, the two companies now span ESSENCE, Girls United, ESSENCE Studios, ESSENCE Festival of Culture, Refinery29, AFROPUNK and Beautycon alongside REVOLT’s music, sports, gaming and creator-focused brands. In theory, this creates a single point of access for advertisers looking to reach audiences across entertainment, women’s lifestyle, beauty, sports, gaming and technology at scale. Both companies will continue to operate independently, with REVOLT and Offscript Worldwide remaining under CEO Detavio Samuels while the relationship focuses on expanding commercial opportunities for advertisers.
Kirk McDonald, CEO of Sundial Media & Technology Group, framed the deal as a response to a persistent gap in how Black-owned media has been valued.

“For generations, Black-owned media has punched above its weight, shaping culture while being underinvested relative to the value it creates around the world,” McDonald said. “By bringing together complementary audiences, platforms and capabilities, we have an opportunity to give advertisers greater access to the people and communities shaping culture — while preserving the independent ownership, audience trust and authentic voices that make these brands distinct.”
Samuels described the combined portfolios as proof that Black ownership and broad reach aren’t in tension with each other.
“Black-owned media has never meant a Black-only audience — and this ecosystem is proof at scale,” he said. “Offscript Worldwide and REVOLT built the audiences driving youth culture across music, gaming and sports. Sundial Media Group adds cross-cultural, multigenerational women’s audiences. Together, that’s the full range of people shaping what’s next. For advertisers, that’s not a niche buy. That’s access to culture itself.”
The timing points to a broader industry shift. Both companies pointed to the value of real-world connection as AI increasingly reshapes media and advertising, citing the 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture, which drew a collective audience of roughly 500,000, as evidence that live experiences still gather communities at a scale social media can’t replicate. That emphasis on trust, authenticity, and in-person community is being positioned as the core competitive advantage both brands bring to the table, not just for their existing audiences but for advertisers deciding where to put their money next.

The deal also reflects how both companies have already been expanding well past their original identities. ESSENCE Ventures and Sundial have grown from a magazine and festival brand into a portfolio touching media, technology, commerce and live experiences, while Offscript Worldwide has built out from REVOLT into a wider ecosystem of media brands and creator platforms, including Rap-Up, 440 Artists and #000000 (Six Zeros), designed to let creators retain ownership of their platforms and IP while tapping into shared infrastructure and distribution.
As mentioned, neither company has disclosed what the investment means in dollar terms, but the deal itself is clear: rather than one brand acquiring the other, this is two independently owned, culture-shaping media companies merging their audiences to compete for advertising dollars against much larger, better-capitalized platforms, while keeping control in Black hands.
