How Lab Grown Diamond Technology Is Affecting Engagement Ring Choices

A 1-carat lab-grown diamond averaged about $1,000 or less in 2025. A mined 1-carat stone of similar quality averaged around $4,200. That gap, close to 73%, is the single fact reshaping how couples shop for an engagement ring. It changes what size a buyer can afford and how they split a fixed budget between the stone and the setting. The technology behind the price is worth knowing, because it explains why the numbers keep moving.
Two production methods produce every man-made stone. High pressure high temperature, or HPHT, uses mechanical pressure and heat to copy the conditions under which diamonds form deep in the earth. Chemical vapor deposition, or CVD, grows a stone by flowing carbon-rich gas over a diamond seed inside a chamber, where microwave energy builds the crystal layer by layer. Both produce a real diamond with the same hardness and optical behavior as a mined one. A gemologist needs specialized equipment to tell them apart.
The CVD Standard
CVD now supplies most of the stones in engagement rings and everyday diamond jewelry. The method gives producers tight control over clarity and lets them grow larger crystals across a longer cycle. Factories in China and India expanded CVD output sharply, and that added supply is the main reason wholesale prices fell roughly 74% between 2020 and 2025. Forecasts point to a further 20% to 30% drop in 2026 compared with 2024 levels.
Falling cost per carat has a direct effect on the counter. Couples who buy lab grown diamonds now treat carat weight as the least constrained part of the decision, since a larger stone no longer forces a much larger bill. The money that once went toward reaching one carat can now buy two, or can move into a better cut grade or a heavier setting.
The Larger Center Stone
The size numbers show the effect plainly. The average lab-grown center stone in an engagement ring grew from 1.31 carats in 2019 to 2.45 carats in 2025, an increase of 87%. That is a large move in a category where carat weight used to set the budget ceiling. Producers now grow 10-carat gems on a routine basis, which pushes the ceiling far above what most buyers need.
The result is a buyer expectation that has moved with the supply. A two-carat center that would have been a luxury purchase a decade ago is now a mid-range choice. This has consequences for setting design, because a larger stone needs a sturdier mount and a band that can balance the weight on the hand.
Gains in Color and Clarity
Early lab-grown stones often had a faint tint, and buyers accepted it in exchange for a lower price. That trade is mostly gone. In 2025, 85.9% of lab-grown diamonds sold were colorless, up from 37.7% in 2020. The jump came from better process control, especially in CVD, where cleaner gas chemistry and steadier growth produce fewer inclusions and less color.
For a shopper, this removes an old worry. A person choosing a man-made stone no longer has to accept a visible compromise on color to get the price. The high-color grades that once cost a premium in mined stones are now common and affordable in lab-grown material, which lets a buyer hold a high clarity and color grade while still spending far less than a mined equivalent would cost.
The Move Toward Fancy Shapes
Cheaper material also changed which shapes couples request. When the stone itself is affordable, buyers feel free to pick a fancy shape. The round brilliant, dominant in bridal for most of the last century, no longer sets the default. Oval became the most requested lab-grown shape in 2025, ahead of round. Elongated cuts such as oval, marquise, and pear look larger for their weight, and a buyer who is already getting more carats for the money often wants a shape that shows them off.
This matters for the setting too. Fancy shapes need mounts built for their outline, so the move toward ovals and other elongated cuts has pulled ring design along with it. A jeweler now stocks a wider range of setting shapes than the round-heavy inventory of ten years ago, and shape preference has become one of the most tracked engagement ring trends.
The Natural Diamond Response
Mined diamonds pushed back. After lab-grown stones climbed past 45% of US engagement ring sales, natural diamonds regained ground, with their share of bridal sales back up to 57.3% in 2025. Part of that comes from price itself. As lab-grown stones get cheaper each year, some buyers question their resale value and their status as a lasting purchase, and they return to a mined stone for its scarcity.
This split leaves couples with a decision to make. A buyer who wants maximum size and the newest color grades for the lowest price leans lab-grown. A buyer who values scarcity and long-term resale leans mined. Neither choice is wrong, and the technology has made the first option far stronger than it was five years ago without erasing the second.
Choosing With the Technology in Mind
A couple shopping now benefits from treating the stone and the setting as two separate budgets. Because lab-grown material is cheap and improving, the stone decision comes down to the exact color, clarity, and shape the wearer wants. Size is no longer the binding constraint. The setting then absorbs the savings through a custom mount, a heavier metal, or side stones.
One practical note concerns future value. Lab-grown prices are still falling, so a stone bought today may cost less next year. A buyer focused on the ring as a purchase to enjoy rather than an asset to resell will not mind. A buyer thinking about resale should weigh that decline honestly before choosing. The technology gives more diamond for the money than ever, and by 2034 the global lab-grown market is projected to reach $91.85 billion, up from $33.54 billion in 2026. That growth means the price and quality trends driving these choices are set to continue, and the buyer who understands the production behind the stone will make a sharper decision than one who shops on carat weight alone.
