Kim Wayans On Creative Autonomy And Reclaiming The Chaos Of ‘Scary Movie 6’
In an era where women are constantly pressured to pick a single professional lane, entertainment icon Kim Wayans is offering golden advice on the power of having a multi-hyphenate mindset. As an actor, writer, director, and producer, Kim has spent decades refusing to let the industry confine her to a box.
Now, after a hiatus, the culture is finally ready for the return of a legendary horror-parody universe. With Scary Movie 6 hitting theaters today, the Wayans family is officially reuniting to bring back the franchise’s original, boundary-pushing comedy.
“You empower yourself when you do more than just one thing. It’s all creativity, it’s all art, and it’s all part of your journey as a creative spirit to expand yourself as much as possible,” Kim told Her Agenda.
All You Need Is An Invitation
For years, audiences have missed the signature, laugh-out-loud parody that only one family could truly deliver. When the chance arose to revive the iconic Scary Movie franchise, the decision to step back into that world was more than looking backward, but also the chance to create.
“I just got the invitation from my brothers,” Kim shared. “They were like, ‘Sis, we want you to come play.’ And when I get my invitation, I roll up my sleeves, and I get to work. But for them, you know, it’s very exciting that this project came back to them. And I think that the culture is just ready.”

The culture is indeed ready. Scary Movie 6 marks a massive, collaborative reunion for the family. It recaptures the original magic, calling back to the beloved core characters of the franchise. Regina Hall’s Brenda and Anna Faris’ Cindy have a resurgence, alongside massive guest spots, like an opening scene featuring Teyana Taylor. By taking sharp, comedic aim at everything from elevated horror films to modern pop culture beefs, the script proves that the Wayans family’s unique comedic style is exactly what audiences need right now.
Refusing The Box And Building Your Own Lane
For the ambitious women in Her Agenda’s community who are actively trying to navigate tough industries and build their own empires, Kim’s career longevity offers vital lessons. She reveals the key to her success is simple: She absolutely refuses to let anyone else determine what her lane is.
“Once you refuse to [be put in a box], then you start opening up your mind creatively as to, ‘okay, well, how am I going to accomplish that?'” Kim explains.

When traditional spaces present limitations, the answer is to leverage your skills to build an independent platform. For Kim, that mindset led to the launch of her own comedy-focused wellness YouTube channel and her show Still Got It.
“Guess what? No network notes,” she says of the independent venture. “Nobody telling me what to do, telling me how I should be, or telling me what is possible.”
For any woman feeling the intense pressure to be a master of only one trade, Kim insists that expanding your skill set behind the scenes is exactly what makes you a powerhouse when you step in front of the camera for a massive production like Scary Movie 6.
“Everything you do informs the next thing that you do,” Kim noted. “And the thing is, you stay busy. You stay working. If you’re just an actress, 99% of the time you’re sitting home waiting by the phone. But if the acting thing’s not happening, you switch gears, you do the directing thing… the producing thing… the writing thing.”
Whether she is calling the shots behind the scenes, creating independent digital content, or bringing her sharp comedic timing to a major theater release, Kim Wayans proves that true professional autonomy belongs to those who dare to do it all.
