You want to wear your natural hair out for the summer instead of opting for the traditional box braids, but you still want a protective style. What should you do with your hair now? The purpose of a protective style is to shield your hair (especially your ends) from breakage and to minimize damage from heat styling or environmental elements like wind, humidity, or dry air. By keeping the hair tucked away, the risk of damage is lowered, which can help with length retention and growth.

Her Style

A beauty column by Niya Doyle

Box braids, twists, and locs, all with hair extensions, are considered protective styles but usually use high-tension methods to install. Typical synthetic hair is cheaper to use than human hair, but it can easily dry your real hair out and be irritating to sensitive scalps . If you’re looking to give your scalp a break, here are three work-friendly styles that don’t require lots of effort to do.

Mini Two-Strand Twists And Mini Braids

Mini twists have gained social media virality over the last year. While they do take some time to install and take down, they can last you until your next wash day. This style can be done with twists or braids, is versatile enough to take you from day to night, and can be worn up or down. You can work on dry or damp hair and still get that full, juicy look!

Buns

Buns can work as a low-tension style if the hair isn’t pulled back tightly and the hair is well moisturized. Think of a low-key “messy” bun, but a bit polished. Space buns are a popular low-tension style that’s easy to refresh throughout the week. Slicked-back low buns are a staple go-to for many Black women and hold less tension than a high bun, but always be careful to not pull the hair back too tightly.

Flat Twists

This is a great option if you’re not good at achieving flat cornrows. Twisting the hair typically uses less tension than cornrows and is more flexible to put into any style you want. Flat twist your back into a crown, or throw a few flat twists into a bun.

The Bottom Line

Wearing your natural hair out in a corporate environment can feel intimidating, especially if you work in a predominantly white environment. You may feel tempted to fit in with “safer” hair styling options, but wearing your crown with confidence leads to a better relationship with your hair. In 2026, healthy, flourishing hair is in. Hair damage for the sake of appearances is out
