From music to business Rihanna has exceeded society’s expectations of a young, Black popstar. On February 20th, 1988, Robin Rihanna Fenty was born. Over the years, Rihanna has tapped into her many talents including makeup, acting, and singing. And it’s clear she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Rihanna was born in Barbados. As a child, she used to listen to reggae music and hip-hop the influences of which can be seen in her music now. Rihanna wanted to be as authentic as possible stating, “It’s important for me to know who I am. There’s no way for people to know me.”

In 2005, Rihanna made her music debut with “Pon De Replay,” a reggae and hip-hop-inspired tune that led to her huge success in the music industry.

Rihanna’s music career didn’t stop there. After her big success with her single, her fame increased. Rihanna won a Grammy in 2012 for her music video with Calvin Harris and another one in 2012 for her album Unapologetic.

Rihanna’s acting career

Rihanna always made it known that she wanted to do more than sing. In 2011 Rihanna made her on-screen debut in the movie Battleship. It was recognized that Rhianna could do both. She followed up in 2015 playing the character “Tip” in the animated film Home. Rihanna’s impact on the beauty industry

Rihanna created a hugely successful brand named Fenty that included clothing, makeup, skincare, and lingerie. Fenty was originally a clothing line that partnered with Louis Vuitton from there sprouted many other possibilities. All of those elements combined enable Fenty to become one of the largest business success stories of the decade.

The beauty industry before 2017 reflected a lack of diversity. According to Vogue Magazine, “To say that Fenty Beauty completely changed the beauty industry is no exaggeration.” Foundation and makeup products did not include shades for darker-toned customers. Rihanna recognized the unfairness and disparity and that the was a huge void in the market. On September 8th of 2017, she launched Fenty Beauty, a makeup brand that made complexion products that catered to a wide variety of skin tones. Her brand was one of the firsts to have 40 shades of foundation that had coverage from the lightest shade of the spectrum to the darkest shade. Along with complexion products, Rihanna quickly released more products, such as lip products, eyeshadow, and highlighters.

From her clothes to her beauty products everything she produces makes people appreciate their bodies. Rihanna once said, “You have to just accept your body. You may not love it all the way, but you just have to be comfortable with it, comfortable with knowing that that’s your body.”

Giving back to the community

Rihanna has always remembered where she came from. According to Rhianna, “Don’t hide from who you are.” With everything, she does she makes sure she is inclusive. In 2012 she created Clara Lionel a non-profit organization. The foundation was named after her grandmother, the foundation helps and funds educational systems and early response programs worldwide.
