Routines + Rituals: Tracey Baker-Simmons, Executive Producer Of Baker Simmons Media

For more than two decades, Tracey Baker-Simmons has built a career rooted in authenticity and storytelling. The Emmy-nominated producer redefined reality television with the groundbreaking Being Bobby Brown, long before social media made unfiltered glimpses of celebrity life the norm. Her work has consistently centered on giving people space to own and share their truth; a commitment she carries into her role today as a mentor, creative, and the force behind Baker Simmons Media.
From her pioneering projects in unscripted television to her more recent work in scripted films and documentaries, Tracey remains a self-described “creator at heart,” driven by faith, purpose, and the belief that media shapes culture.
Her Agenda spoke with Tracey about her daily routines and rituals, offering a glimpse into the daily practices that contribute to her success.

Her Agenda: What does your morning routine look like, and how does it set the tone for your day?
Tracey Baker-Simmons: My day starts with some simple but powerful self-care. First thing, I drink water to hydrate after sleeping. Then I take a few minutes for prayer to center myself. After that, I spend time journaling to sort through my thoughts and set intentions for the day. I finish with a good stretch to wake up my body. This little morning routine helps me start each day feeling balanced and ready for whatever comes my way.
Her Agenda: What’s one non-negotiable habit or ritual that has had the biggest impact on your success?
Tracey Baker-Simmons: Prayer has been my anchor in the entertainment industry. While others scramble to navigate the constant changes and unpredictability of this business, I’ve found that my daily conversation with God keeps me centered. It’s the one non-negotiable habit that has truly shaped my success. When projects fall through, schedules shift, or industry trends suddenly change direction, my faith provides the steady foundation I need. In an environment where so many factors remain beyond anyone’s control, prayer gives me perspective and peace that no industry connection or strategy ever could.
Her Agenda: How do you stay focused and productive while balancing multiple responsibilities?
Tracey Baker-Simmons: I’m a bit old-school but still love my tech. Instead of paper planners, I use my iPad with a digital version of the Full Focus planner. Gives me that traditional planning feel I like without all the paper. Each morning, I figure out what really matters for the day ahead. Just helps me stay on track and not get pulled in a million directions. Simple but effective.
Her Agenda: What’s a challenge you’ve faced in your journey, and how did your routines or mindset help you overcome it?
Tracey Baker-Simmons: I’ve realized my biggest struggle is just hanging in there. The entertainment world is in total flux right now – streamers taking over, cable TV basically dying out, and everyone’s cutting budgets and playing it safe. Even though I’ve made some good progress, I’m still just a small player trying to be heard in this massive industry. Some days it’s really tough to keep my spirits up and continue pushing to create my own chances. It takes real persistence to keep fighting for space and getting my voice out there when the whole landscape keeps shifting underneath me. Which is why my faith and prayer is super important in giving me the much needed energy to persevere. That daily connection keeps me going when the industry gets overwhelming and helps me believe in my path even when doors seem to be closing.

Her Agenda: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received that has shaped how you approach your goals?
Tracey Baker-Simmons: Best advice I’ve received came when I was feeling the industry rollercoaster – all those ups and downs that can really mess with your head. Someone told me “media influences culture” and it just clicked for me. That simple phrase gave me my big “why” – a reason to keep going when things get tough. It helps me remember that what we create actually shapes how people think and behave. Now I approach my work with intention, trying to create with conscience and bring mindfulness to an industry that often overlooks these things. When projects fall through or budgets get cut, I remind myself that I’m in this to make content that matters, not just to chase the next paycheck or credit.
Her Agenda: How do you handle the emotional load of being in a high-impact position while balancing your personal life?
Tracey Baker-Simmons: Creating balance is key in any industry but over the years I’ve learned to be firm about maintaining certain routines. I now prioritize dedicated time away with family and set clear shutdown hours. This boundary-setting didn’t come naturally at first in an industry that constantly demands attention, but I’ve found it essential for my wellbeing and creativity. When I step away completely, I return with fresh perspectives and more energy. The entertainment world will always be there with its urgent demands, but I’ve realized that protecting my personal time and relationships ultimately makes me better at what I do professionally. Those non-negotiable breaks have become as important to my success as any networking event or production meeting.
Her Agenda: If you could give one piece of advice to women striving to achieve success on their own terms, what would it be?
Tracey Baker-Simmons: My advice to any woman looking to achieve success on your own terms is to first figure out who you are and what principles matter most to you, then stay steadfast in representing that fully. The world will try to reshape you to fit what others think success should look like. But your uniqueness is actually your greatest asset. When you know your core values and show up authentically, you attract the right opportunities and people who appreciate what you bring to the table. There’s incredible power in being firmly rooted in your identity when everyone else is shifting with trends. The path might be longer sometimes, but success built on your true self is both more meaningful and more satisfying in the end.
