The tennis world hasn’t been the same since September 2022. A tennis icon and legend announced her retirement from the game and her road map for her life afterward. Of course, this describes Serena Williams, who has increased her net worth while growing her entrepreneurial accomplishments.

“I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me,” Serena wrote for Vogue. “Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis toward other things that are important to me.”

Serena Williams’ Entrepreneurial Accomplishments

Born in Saginaw, Mich., and raised in Compton, Calif., the tennis virtuoso had a headstart expanding her resume from sports. Williams has been an investor and business owner for some years, capitalizing on endorsement deals. Her ventures range from clothing with S by Serena to sports team ownership.

“Being an entrepreneur is not always easy,” she said in an Instagram post. “My days often begin at the break of dawn and extend well into the night.” But in the end, I love reinventing myself in different and authentic ways. Transitioning from a tennis player to a venture capitalist has allowed me to pursue my passion for investing in women. It’s important to invest in us and not be afraid to showcase our stories and businesses.”

In 2005, the Williams sisters wrote a book together, “Venus & Serena: Serving From the Hip: Ten Rules for Living, Loving, and Winning.” In 2009, Serena released her autobiography, “On the Line.” Then, in 2022, she authored the children’s book, “The Adventures of Qai Qai.” 

She has owned minority stakes in the Miami Dolphins football team since 2009, the mixed martial arts promotion company Ultimate Fighting Championship since 2016, the women’s soccer team Angel City FC since 2020, and the Los Angeles Golf Club team since 2023.

In addition, Serena founded Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm, in 2017. The firm invests in underrepresented women-run startups.

In 2022, she co-founded Will Perform, a startup that creates products for topical pain relief and muscle and skin care.

No stranger to Hollywood, Serena has appeared in music videos, films, and television series over the years. She’s also a producer and executive producer. In 2023, she started the multimedia production company Nine Two Six Productions. The company already has multiple projects in the works, including the soccer documentary, “Copa 71.”

Wyn Beauty by Serena Williams was introduced in 2024. Glowing in tennis ball green, you can now buy makeup for your face, lips, and eyes. The collection is available online and at Ulta Beauty.

Per Forbes, Williams is worth over $340 million. Here’s a breakdown of her earnings.

Tennis

Considered one of the greatest athletes of all time, the tennis champion earned an average of around $40 million per year from playing on-court and through endorsements. During her career, she won $95 million in prize money.

Endorsements

In 2003, Williams inked a deal with Nike for $55 million over eight years. Forbes reports that Williams earned an estimated $45 million pretax from 2022 to 2023, mainly from lucrative endorsements with brands including Nike, Lincoln, and Michelob Ultra beer. She’s also worked with AbbVie, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Audemars Piguet, Block Inc., DirecTV, Ford, Gatorade, Gucci, Hanesbrands, Subway, Tonal, and Wilson Sporting Goods. 

Investments

Serena Ventures launched in 2015. The startup companies in her investment portfolio are valued at over $1 billion. 

Williams is a minority stakeholder of the Miami Dolphins NFL team, valued at an estimated $5.7 billion.

Real Estate

Williams lived with her sister, Venus Williams, for much of their adult lives. In 1998, the pair purchased a one-acre lot in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla, for $525,000. According to Architectural Digest, they sold off the property in early 2019 for $2.3 million.

Initially purchased for a little over $6.6 million in 2006, Serena’s 2.7-acre Bel-Air estate sold for $8.1 million after listing it for nearly $12 million in 2019.

In 2007, she bought a 2-bedroom apartment in Paris with a view of the Eiffel Tower for an undisclosed amount. 

In addition, she purchased another Palm Beach Gardens property for $2.5 million in May 2015. She sold the home for $2.775 million at the end of 2020.

North of Miami, for an undisclosed amount, she bought a 14,500-square-foot mansion in 2017, which is one of her main residences. 

Williams and her husband, Alex Ohanian, also purchased a Beverly Hills mansion in 2017 for $6.7 million. 

She bought a 10,433-square-foot property in Jupiter, Fla, for $8 million in September 2020.

Cars

EssentiallySports states that Williams owns a car collection worth over $2 million. Her garage has an Aston Martin Vanquish, Bently Continental, Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, and a Range Rover. 

Serena Williams’ net worth is a testament to her fulfilling her ambitions and putting her ideals out into the world. As she says on her website, “Serena dreams big and lives her life even bigger. She’s not even close to done.”
