In 2022, when Serena Williams wrote her iconic Vogue essay announcing her transition away from professional tennis, she gave ambitious women everywhere a new piece of vocabulary. She proudly rejected the word “retirement,” choosing instead to describe her next chapter as an “evolution.” She expanded her family with Alexis Ohanian, welcoming her second child, scaling her business ventures, and mastering life outside the lines of the court.

For Serena Williams, the concept of evolution doesn’t have a destination.

This week, the 23-time tennis champion proved retirement was not the term to describe her career. According to NBC News, four years after stepping back, Serena is officially returning to the singles court at Wimbledon after accepting a last-minute wild-card entry. Additionally, her sister, Venus Williams, will be joining her to dominate the doubles draw.

Despite an appearance in doubles at the HSBC Championships, Williams’ return wasn’t a meticulously calculated one. It was an exercise in recognition and intuition. The opportunity to claim a singles wild-card spot at Wimbledon presented itself. Instead of overthinking the pivot, she took the leap.

“I thought, not every day Wimbledon holds a wild card for someone,” Williams told the press. “I can name probably like a handful of people. I happened to be one of those people. I thought I should really take this opportunity. Who knows if I’ll ever make it here again? This could be it.”

Serena’s choice provides an excellent lesson: when you maintain a reputation of excellence, doors will open for you when you least expect it. True ambition means having the confidence to say “yes” to a sudden opportunity, even if it disrupts your current routine.

When Serena steps onto the court, she faces 20-year-old Australian player Maya Joint, who is ranked No. 87 and fighting for her first-ever breakthrough past the first round at Wimbledon. With an overall Wimbledon record of 98-14, Williams isn’t returning because she has anything left to prove to the world. She is returning because her passion demands it.

Serena Williams’ return alongside Venus is a beautiful reminder that we do not have to be boxed into our past choices. You can dedicate yourself to whatever your heart desires.

Ambition Delivered.
