States With More Women in Office Do Better (INFOGRAPHIC)
It’s a known fact that women don’t fare too well in federal government. Only 18.5% of our Congressional representatives are women. But there isn’t as much conversation about women in our state legislatures. Many of our senators and representatives come up through there.
Moreover, state legislatures are key because they draft the majority of laws that affect our lives directly. We wanted to explore how having more female state representatives would affect the wellbeing of a state. It is important to remember that these are only observations of correlation. We cannot yet say that having more women in a governing body would cause a higher minimum wage or a higher median income. However, these graphs do show that there is a relationship between more female representation and general wellbeing in a state. Check out what we found:
