A recent study shows the top tourist destinations where getting a restful night might be the most challenging for travelers. The study, led by mattress company Onebed, examined 30 cities and looked at average noise levels, negative hotel reviews related to sleep quality and the number of tourists in 2023 to determine which tourist destination might be the most difficult for you to get a restful night’s sleep.

Here are the top five destinations that might be tricky for light sleepers:

Hong Kong

The study ranked Hong Kong as the most difficult tourist destination in which to get a good night’s sleep, citing high noise levels (91.4 average dBA), 73% negative hotel reviews on sleep quality, poor air quality and nightclub activity that goes well into the early hours of the morning.

Cancun, Mexico

Cancun was cited as the second worst destination for restful sleep in the study, with an average noise level of 103 dBA and 66% negative hotel reviews on sleep quality.

The air quality index was the same at Hong Kong (58) and similarly shared nightclub operating hours that went nearly sunrise.

Las Vegas, USA

Third on the list was Las Vegas, Nevada, which had an average noise level of 94 dBA and 57% negative hotel reviews on sleep quality.

While the air quality index was slightly better than both Cancun and Hong Kong (45), a combination of high average annual number of tourists (40.83 million) and long nightclub operating hours set it securely in third place.

Shanghai, China

With an average 3.64 million annual number of tourists, Shanghai is far less visited than either Hong Kon (14.7 million visitors) and Cancun (10.8 million visitors), but it’s high average noise levels (85 dBA) and poor air quality (66) landed the city in fourth place.

Shanghai also had 62% negative hotel reviews on sleep quality and nightclub operating hours that lasted until 5 a.m.

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul boasts one of the highest annual number of tourists (20.2 million) on the list, and its 71% negative hotel reviews on sleep quality and poor air quality (65) could not combat its relatively low average noise levels (59 dBA) to land it in fifth place.

The Best City To Get A Good Night’s Sleep: Bali

Bali, Indonesia was ranked as the overall best tourist destination for getting a good night’s sleep, with 25% negative hotel reviews on sleep quality, a relatively low average noise level, and nightclub hours that only extend until 3 a.m.
