Have you ever asked yourself the question, “Why am I so unmotivated?”

Feeling a lack of motivation in life can be challenging, but did you know it can also point to more than just feeling off? When you lack the drive to pursue your goals and passions, it can be an alarming sign that something is wrong.

What Causes A Lack Of Motivation?

There are many factors behind why you might be experiencing a lack of motivation. For example, feeling overwhelmed is a common reason that causes people to become unmotivated. Responsibilities are part of being an adult, whether they be personal or professional. But when your To-Do list starts to add up, it can be easy to become overwhelmed. As a result, you could lose interest in even trying.

Another reason people ask themselves “Why am I so unmotivated?” is a fear of failure. Failing is a necessary part of learning and growing, but many people avoid it like the plague. And even though this might feel good in the short term, trying to avoid the inevitable can do more harm than good in the long run.

The truth is that everyone fails. But failure presents an opportunity to learn and grow. Embracing your wins AND failures is the key to becoming a better version of yourself, so instead of avoiding defeat, get back up and try again.

Beyond that, there are other factors that can cause apathy, which include stress, depression, low self-esteem, and perfectionism. Fortunately, there are ways to change your mindset so that you have the motivation to take better charge of your life.

When you surround yourself with people who have a positive mindset, you start to think as they do. To do this, try attending seminars, listening to podcasts, or even reading books from people who have become successful by overcoming obstacles.

“Sometimes you have to pursue people as an entrepreneur,” life coach Brinya Bain shared on her YouTube channel regarding surrounding herself with positive people. She also recommended looking for like-minded and supportive people in Facebook groups and other online forums.

4. Incorporate Self-care

Self-care is more than just a social media buzzword — it’s a necessary part of maintaining a happy, healthy you.

Everyone should make time to care for their of your physical and mental health. And fortunately, you can practice self-care even with very little time or money.

For example, something as simple as daily exercising or getting adequate sleep can improve your mood, contributing to your overall outlook on life. And learning a new skill or cultivating a new hobby can not only benefit your mental health but also your resume or work performance.

“Take care of yourself,” Brinya added. “If I feel myself getting too overwhelmed or if I feel I’ve been hustling too hard, I make a point to give myself a break. This is a long game and I want to make sure I have enough stamina to keep going.”

5. Seek Healthy Relationships

Toxic relationships and other bad influences can cause a lot of harm to your mental health. Instead, you should invest in a circle of family or friends who you turn to for encouragement, positivity, and support.

6. Reward Yourself

Whenever you have a particularly good day, why not celebrate it? Perhaps you received a job promotion, or maybe you took on a difficult project at work. Whatever the case, you should take time to recognize your progress so that you can reinforce positive behaviors so that you’re more likely to repeat them.
