Hillman College is opening its doors again! Netflix has released the first trailer for its “A Different World” sequel series, and the freshman class this time around comes with a familiar last name attached.

The new series follows Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the daughter of the original characters Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy). Deborah arrives at Hillman carrying her parents’ legacy and their expectations, telling viewers that her mom and dad have been hyping up the school her whole life and that she is determined to make it her own.

Debbie Allen, who directed the majority of the original series and returns here as executive producer and premiere director, sits opposite Deborah in the trailer as her academic advisor, guiding her through a first year that is messier and more uncertain than Deborah expected.

Showrunner Felicia Pride built Deborah to feel familiar to anyone who has ever started over somewhere new, someone still finding her footing rather than someone who has it all figured out from day one.

“It was important to craft a character who’s trying to figure it out, who’s a little messy, who’s a little all over the place because this is a character that a lot of young people can relate to,” said Felicia.

Around her, the show introduces a new circle of Hillman students, including her roommate Rashida (Alijah Kai), and reintroduces a face from Deborah’s past in Shaquille (Cornell Young IV), an athlete with his own family ties to the original show through his father, played by Darryl M. Bell.

The trailer also leans into nostalgia without making that the whole pitch. Original cast members Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Debbie Allen, and Darryl Bell return, alongside Cree Summer, Jenifer Lewis, and Jada Pinkett Smith, giving longtime fans a look at where these characters have landed decades later. Allen has described the franchise’s real purpose as showing young people thriving on a college campus, building friendships, navigating love, and simply living full lives.

"Two adults sit at an outdoor café table with coffee cups and napkins, looking up at someone. People in casual clothes and a brick wall are in the background, giving a relaxed social setting."

Felicia shared her own reaction to seeing the trailer for the first time in a recent LinkedIn post, writing that she got emotional watching it.

“I got emotional watching our trailer the first time! I feel like it captures the energy and heart of our show and how hard we worked to return to Hillman College, some 40 years later, for a new generation.”

She also credited the crew and cast, saying they poured their hearts into it.

“A Different World” premieres on Netflix September 24,th and based on the trailer alone, the new Hillman class has plenty to live up to, and just as much room to make the campus theirs. Will you be tuning in? Check out more stills from the upcoming series!
