It seems like you can’t go a single day without hearing about the price of something going up, whether it’s the cost of your weekly supermarket shop or your streaming services. Of course, one of the biggest concerns when it comes to our biggest expenses is energy. There have been some nightmare news stories about some of the nation’s biggest energy suppliers recently, and every homeowner is looking for ways they can keep the cost of their bills down.

It is also the case that everyone is looking for ways they can make their home a little greener. There have been so many upsetting stories over the last couple of years about the increasing impact of climate change, not to mention warnings from scientists and experts, that we are all thinking about what we can do to be a part of the solution. Your home is one of the biggest areas that you can focus on. Let’s look at how you can make green, energy-efficient choices without spending too much.

1. Start small.

Most people grew up with parents who had a sixth sense for whether you had touched the thermostat and would always know whether you had left a light on upstairs. While these instructions may have driven you crazy as a teenager, you can certainly see the wisdom in them as an adult homeowner.

There are so many small things that you can do around the house to keep your costs down and go greener. For example, switching your lightbulbs to LED ones will create a lot less waste energy. Switching off any electronics like your TV or computer when you are not using them will save you money.

2. Invest in good insulation.

If you want to keep your energy bills down, then insulation is one of the most important areas to focus on. It can be incredibly frustrating to spend so much time debating whether or not it is really cold enough to put the heating on when you know that so much of that warmth is just going to bleed straight out of your poorly insulated home. One of the easiest fixes to this problem is to invest in double-glazing, or triple glazing if you want to be as well-insulated as possible.

It can be particularly useful on any attic or roof windows which are always going to be exposed to the elements. If you think that you could benefit from the insulation, and the savings that insulation will provide, then triple-glazed roof windows for home options could be for you. 3. Upgrade your appliances.

This point can be a little tricky because it always involves spending money upfront. However, let’s start by talking about how much money and energy you will be wasting if you keep appliances and white goods that are no longer working properly. The best example of this is generally the tumble dryer or the washer-dryer. These (especially the latter) are often cited as one of the least energy-efficient appliances in the house even when they are working properly.

But as these machines age, they will start to go through a lot of wear and tear, and that is where you can end up needing to run them for much longer just to get them to finish a single load. When you buy a newer model, it will have a better energy efficiency rating, which means that you will save money on your energy bills in the long term.

4. Look for better recycling options.

Most people tend to have much better recycling habits than they used to. Everyone knows how to sort their household recycling waste, for the most part, but there is always more that you could be doing. If you have a home with a garden, why not think about putting in a compost heap? You can make your own rich compost that can do wonders for your wildlife with a lot of your kitchen waste. You could also think about trying to repair things in your home that are broken instead of taking them straight to the bin. A quick internet tutorial could save you a lot of money!

Finally, it is really important to think about how you are disposing of your electronic waste. E-waste has been a major issue around the world. Think about whether you could take an old appliance to a charity shop instead of the trash bin, and if it really doesn’t work anymore, make sure you take it to a proper electronic waste dump for proper handling.
