Though higher temperatures and brighter evenings are longed for throughout the colder months, come summer the differentiating climate can cause havoc with our sleeping patterns. Thanks to an abundance of early morning light, and rooms lacking in quality air, it’s understandable that sleeping can be a difficult task. Scientifically, the human body falls asleep most readily when falling in core temperature, so a rise in room temperature can result in a sleepless night. There are however several steps that can be taken to create a more sleep-friendly environment, here are just five to consider.

Consider An Air-Cooling System

In the midst of a summer heatwave, cool air can only be dreamed of. In rooms that offer little in the way of breeze, consider an air-cooling system. Implementing air-conditioning would be the most ideal solution. There are however a range of other air-cooling options available, with everything from generic ceiling fans to the more high-tech air purifying fans to mull over.

Shut Out The Light

The increase of light can cause havoc with your sleeping pattern, and you could well find yourself struggling to get to sleep throughout the brighter nights and waking up earlier as the sun rises. To combat this, consider investing in thicker, light-blocking materials. Blackout curtains not only prevent unwanted light, but they also protect your sleeping space from excess heat and have noise reduction qualities.

Choose Suitable Bedding

choosing bedding for your room

Hot weather and down bedding aren’t exactly a match made in heaven. In hot weather, we’re much more likely to struggle to sleep due to feeling warm and sticky, and knowing what bedding is best can be a difficult task. It’s advisable to always select 100% cotton bedding in summer, as cotton is a natural material that has the ability to make bedding extremely breathable. Not only this, but cotton bedding also has fantastic moisture wicking properties, and works through the night by absorbing your body heat as you sleep, leaving you both cool and dry.

Feel The Freeze

If getting to sleep in the heat is the main issue at hand, putting your bed sheets into the freezer could well be the answer. When preparing for sleep, the body needs to drop in temperature, yet getting into warm sheets could well hinder this process. To combat this, simply put your sheets in a sealable bag and place them in the freezer for several minutes. When you are ready to go to bed, pop your freshly chilled sheets on the bed and enjoy the cooling sensation as you drift off to sleep.

Turn Off Electrical Appliances

Electrical appliances such as lights, televisions, radios and chargers should all be turned off as bedtime looms in order to support a better-quality night’s sleep. Not only do these gadgets give off additional heat, those with screens also emit blue light which has sleep prohibiting properties.
