Mercury retrograde has a bad reputation for coinciding with all the negative things that happen in our lives. But retrogrades happen three to four times a year, so it’s impossible to hide under the covers for around three weeks until they pass. If you’ve been hunting for a new job and are considering accepting an offer, should you start a job during Mercury retrograde? Well, it’s a little complicated.

What Is Mercury Retrograde?

Mercury is the planet that governs communication. Most of our day-to-day lives revolve around communication, and when that gets muddy, things get interesting.

Retrogrades are when the normally fast-moving planet Mercury slows down and appears to go backwards. As the planet slows down, it invites you to slow down as well. Taking a step back to be more present, think more critically, and consider how our words land with others.

It can feel like all of our well-laid plans fizzle out during a retrograde, and things may seem more complex or frustrating. Much of the advice you’ll read will tell you not to start something new, but if you’ve been longing for a change in your job, a finite no isn’t the best solution.

Astrology is all about making informed decisions. Armed with more knowledge, you have an opportunity to operate from a more empowered place.

If you’ve been craving a change in your work life, you should go for it, no matter the time of year. Taking precautions is the key to making such a big change during Mercury retrograde.

Since communication is a major factor, being more articulate and precise will help you get your point across more effectively. Whether you’re officially accepting the job offer or anticipating your first day, you could try writing down what you’d like to say or the questions you’d like to ask.

Ask for help to pick up on things you may have missed. For example, have a lawyer review your contract before you sign or a friend look over the job responsibilities and benefits so you can get another set of eyes on your job prospect. Reexamining details three or four times will help you to stay on top of what’s important so you don’t miss a thing.

As you take the opportunity to recalibrate and reflect, ensure you’re taking the time to review as many aspects of the new job as possible. Whether that’s travel plans, necessary conversations, or having a backup plan for any technology issues, your patience will go a long way to make retrograde less uncomfortable.

So, if you’re still wondering whether to start a new job during Mercury retrograde, it depends on how much you want to prep for your new role. Things can certainly be more challenging during Mercury retrograde, but what’s most important is that you feel confident in your choices and move forward.
