Tyler Perry Takes The ‘Why Did I Get Married’ Crew To Italy, And Taraji P. Henson Is Joining The Group

The friend group from Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?” franchise is getting back together, and this time the reunion comes with a wedding, a new face, and plenty of drama. Netflix has dropped the trailer for “Why Did I Get Married Again?,” the third film in the series, premiering September 9th.

16 years after the last installment, the story picks up as Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White) gather everyone in Italy for their daughter Jasmine’s (Armani Greer) wedding to Wesley (Everett Osborne), a rising football star. Wesley’s mother, Roselyn, played by Taraji P. Henson, has apparently been part of the friend group all along, but this is the first time audiences are actually meeting her. Perry, who once again writes and directs, brings back the original cast, including Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Sharon Leal, and Lamman Rucker, alongside a new generation of kids who are clearly starting to mirror their parents in more ways than one.

The trailer wastes no time signaling that old habits die hard. There’s a wine glass exchanged for something stronger, a surprise pairing caught sneaking around, and at least one punch thrown before the credits roll. But underneath the comedy is the same question the franchise has always circled back to: how much of a marriage is real, and how much is performance for everyone else. That tension gets voiced directly by Kenya (Laya Deleon Hayes), who calls out her parents and their friends for making their marriages look flawless, prompting Sheila (Jill) to admit their relationships were never as put-together as they appeared.

The “Why Did I Get Married” franchise began in 2007 with couples navigating a mountain retreat meant to strengthen their marriages, followed by a 2010 sequel that took the group to the Bahamas and ended in tragedy. This installment shifts the setting to a wedding instead of a getaway, but keeps the franchise’s signature mix of humor and hard truths intact, this time filtered through a generation of kids watching their parents’ marriages up close for the first time.
