Millennials represent the largest generation in the job market, according to research, and they’re tasked with remaining competitive in today’s ever-evolving job market. And as many began to age into the “elder” or “geriatric” millennial category (hitting their mid-30s to early 40s), these leaders must continue to remain competitive.

How can this group of experienced, talented professionals stand out better in a competitive job market and secure their desired jobs?

1. Be sure your tech skills are up to date.

Identify the latest electronics, software and other technologies relevant to your industry and be sure you at least know the basics of how to use them. Consistently refreshing your skills can help you keep up with rapidly evolving platforms and tools. Around 92% of jobs posted in 2021 demanded digital skills. These may not be jobs in the technology industry, but being a medical assistant, teacher or bank employee might now require fluency in specific apps, software and devices.

Maximize free, beginner-friendly tutorials online or ask other colleagues for tips. This is especially valuable, because according to a Stanford report, Gen Zers value collaboration to get things done in the workplace.

2. Acquire new certifications.

If your work requires certifications, contact the organization that issued them to ensure they are still valid. You can also ask your employer for seminars or classes that can help boost your industry knowledge. For instance, Coursera provides 40 entry-level professional certificates from Google, Microsoft and IBM to people without prior experience. This step is crucial to solidifying your expertise in the field, making you a more attractive candidate for promotion or new job opportunities.

According to Rena Minudri, Coursera’s chief learning officer, these certifications are created for people looking to advance their careers, including older professionals who can mentor younger colleagues in an AI-driven world.

Search for valuable training or classes in your industry to stay on top of the game. Check out free online courses on reputable websites, such as Coursera, Harvard University and edX. Staying active in your professional association is also an excellent way to establish yourself as relevant in your field.

3. Continuously enhance your digital footprint.

A strong digital footprint is essential to make your presence known to potential employers. For older millennials, this means getting beyond the profile and sharing relevant articles, status updates and videos. Nurture your LinkedIn relationships by liking, sharing and commenting on their posts. This is a great way to establish yourself as a thought leader in the industry.

You can also set up a professional website if you have the resources. Part of creating a website is ensuring visitors stay on your page. Inject unique digital elements to make your page stand out. For instance, consider uploading a video detailing your services. Around 45% of businesses use video to simplify their offerings on their homepage, potentially attracting more paying customers. Look at Accomplice’s website — their background video offers a glimpse into their expertise.

4. Emphasize your soft skills, especially those that offer results that AI alone cannot.

Soft skills refer to gifts and qualifications such as communication, leadership and problem-solving. These enable you to think outside the box and promote a harmonious work environment. These abilities have also become essential as the digital era continues to reshape the job market.

Dr. Kelly Dore, vice president and co-founder of science and innovation at Acuity Insights, calls these capabilities “durable skills,” noting that they are the key differentiator that impacts what people can offer in the workplace.

She said via Forbes, “If everybody in the room is given the same access to AI and knowledge bases, then what can we add to the room instead? Successfully navigating courses is important, but the goal is creating compassionate, thoughtful leaders who can collaborate and solve complex problems.”

5. Assert confidence in your expertise and experience.

Consider setting aside a few minutes daily to create a blog post, share a LinkedIn update or share your thoughts in industry-related discussions. Your experience has given you a perspective that can inspire the younger generation. Always stay true to who you are by focusing on honing your craft.
