Issa’s first foray into the TV world began in 2011 as an executive producer for the TV series “M.O. Diaries.” However, it wasn’t until the release of Issa’s YouTube series, “Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” in 2011 that catapulted her career. Although “Insecure” has ended, Netflix picked up all five seasons on their streaming platform in the summer of 2023, which adds to Issa’s growing net worth.

In addition, Issa secured a $40 million deal to create more content for HBO, HBO Max, and Warner Bros. Television. This deal followed her 2016 two-year deal with HBO before the debut of “Insecure.” As a result, the new deal led to the creation of the reality TV show “Sweet Life: Los Angeles,” featured on Max. The show highlighted the personal and professional lives of young Black adults in L.A. focused on chasing their dreams. The series was canceled after two seasons in December 2022.

Issa also welcomed “Rap Sh!t” into the fold in July 2022. The series chronicled the journey of two high-school friends in Miami hoping to make it big as a female rap group. Unfortunately, the Max series was canceled after two seasons in December 2023.

Issa Rae has appeared in various Blockbuster films.

Similar to her success in TV, Issa’s Hollywood film career continues to grow. As of June 2024, Issa has appeared in nearly 15 movies. Some of Issa’s most recognized roles include April Williams in the 2019 fantasy comedy “Little,” Mae Morton in the 2020 romantic drama “The Photograph,” and the voice of Jessica Drew in 2023’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

Most notably, Issa starred in Great Gerwig’s “Barbie” in 2024, where she played President Barbie. The film, which received critical acclaim, earned $162 million on its opening weekend and has made nearly $1.5 billion at the box office domestically and worldwide. According to People, it is one of 53 films to hit the $1 billion milestone.

According to Issa’s IMDb page, she has two upcoming movies: “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” in production and “Empress of Serenity” in pre-production. 

Issa Rae is slowly building her real estate empire.

Although Issa’s real estate ventures are not plentiful at this time, she is taking full advantage of her ownership. Per Celebrity Net Worth, the entertainment mogul owns a home in South L.A. that she listed on Airbnb in 2022. 

“I’m inviting guests to spend a weekend in my hometown to experience the culture, businesses, and communities that influence my storytelling on screen,” Issa wrote in the listing via the outlet. “I can’t wait to show guests all the things that make black LA so special firsthand.”
